Compartmentalization

Yesterday, I received an email inviting me to send a resume and samples of my book design work for consideration as a freelance designer for educational, trade, and non-profit work. Out of curiousity since I don’t look at book design in such a compartmentalized way, I went online and did some research into educational, trade, and non-profit book design. What I found was that each was nothing more than “book design.”

What made it trade or educational is the subject matter or the company authoring the book. But the bottom line is that it is still simply basic book design.

So, I’ll forward them my resume and I’ll send them my samples. I’ll also take time to write a letter to them explaining what I do, why I do what I do and why I love doing what I do. Chances are it won’t be what they want but at the end of the day I will at least sleep with the knowledge that I tried to educate yet another person about the passion I have for the work I do.

That will make it a very good day.
